Outcomes of CPA's Research on Cost & Strategies of Obtaining Overseas Patent Protection in Print
Recently, the outcomes of a State Intellectual Property Office (SIPO)-commissioned research project concerning the cost and strategies of obtaining overseas patent protection for Chinese applicants have been in print. The research project, conducted in 2013, was undertaken by China Patent Agent (H.K.) Ltd. (CPA).
The research mainly studied the cost that may be incurred in overseas patent applications for Chinese applicants as well as concessionary policies applicable to overseas patent applicants in various jurisdictions. It delved into the patent application process and corresponding cost structure (comprising official fees and attorney fees) in countries and regions including the US, Canada, EU, the UK, France, Germany, Japan, Korea, Russia, Mexico, Australia, and India. In addition, the implications of Patent Prosecution Highway (PPH), as a partnership programme between IP offices for acceleration of patent examination process, for overseas patent applications was explored.
The research project concluded successfully by the end of 2014, and the outcomes of which were thoroughly discussed during the expert review with their significance fully acknowledged by the member experts. The idea of publishing the research results was put forward by Intellectual Property Publishing House of SIPO in the second half of 2016, and the publication in print now has incorporated updates on relevant developments in the mentioned jurisdictions over recent years.
