China IP Society & American IP Law Association Members Meet in CPA Beijing Office on Trade Secret Protection in China

On 24 October 2013, China Intellectual Property Society (CIPS) received representatives from Koch Industries, Inc. and Invista, both members of American Intellectual Property Law Association (AIPLA), for a meeting to study issues related to trade secret protection in China. China Patent Agent (H.K.) Ltd. (CPA), a member of CIPS, was glad that the meeting was held in its Beijing office. This was the first time CIPS conducted similar activity at a member' office as part of its efforts to consolidate ties with members.

The meeting was chaired by CIPS deputy secretary-general Mr. Ma Xiushan. The AIPLA delegation comprised five members, including deputy general managers and senior counsels from Koch and Invista. The Chinese side was represented by seven, including Mr. Zhang Yurui, former research fellow at Institute of Law; Chinese Academy of Social Sciences; Ms. Gong Haijun, deputy director of Beijing Guo Wei Intellectual Property Judicial Expertizing Center; and representatives from domestic IP law firms, among them CPA deputy general manager Ms. Tina Tai and its legal affairs department deputy manager Mr. Li Jiang.

At the meeting the US and Chinese parties discussed and exchanged views on various aspects of trade secret protection in China, such as relevant legal system and procedures, identification of specific legal issues, determination of infringement, compensation for damage, and avoidance of disputes. Ms. Tina Tai and Mr. Li Jiang, in particular, shared their ideas on how foreign enterprises could reduce risk of trade secret leakage and avoid disputes over trade secrets, with feasible suggestions offered to address the concerns of the AIPLA member companies.
