CNIPA Publishes China's IP Statistics for 2020
Recently, the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) released during a press briefing the IP statistics of China for 2020, covering patents, trademarks, geographical indications (GI), and layout designs for integrated circuits (IC).
According to the statistics, in 2020, the CNIPA granted 530,127 invention patents, 2,377,223 utility model patents, and 731,918 design patents; it also accepted 72,349 PCT international patent applications, of which 66,948 were domestic filings (up 17.9% year-on-year). Moreover, 48,000 patent reexamination cases (up 28.9% year-on-year) and 7,000 patent invalidation cases (up 34.1% year-on-year) were concluded during the year.
In terms of trademarks, in 2020, the CNIPA registered 5,760,652 trademarks and received 7,553 domestic applications for international trademark registrations under the Madrid Agreement (a year-on-year increase of 16.1%). During the year, 149,000 trademark opposition cases were examined (up 64.7% year-on-year) and 358,285 trademark review and adjudication cases (up 7.8% year-on-year) concluded.
Regarding GI, the CNIPA in 2020 accepted 10 applications for protection of GI products, approved 6 GI products, approved 1,052 businesses for using special signs on GI products, and registered 765 GI trademarks. Cumulatively, China had 2,391 protected GI products, 9,479 businesses approved for the use of special signs on GI products, and 6,085 GI trademarks as of the end of 2020.
In respect of IC layout designs, 14,375 applications for registration of IC layout designs were filed with the CNIPA (up 72.8% year-on-year), and 11,727 certificates for IC layout designs were issued (up 77.3% year-on-year) during the year.
