WIPO Releases Chinese Version of Global Innovation Index (GII) 2020
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) recently released the Chinese version of the Global Innovation Index (GII) 2020 report, which was published by WIPO in conjunction with Cornell University and INSEAD in September 2020. The Chinese GII report is a summary version containing the preface, forewords, main findings and rankings of GII 2020, the top 100 science and technology clusters rankings, the theme article, and the economy profiles and data of China.
The GII 2020 report, in its 13th edition, presents the latest global innovation trends and the annual innovation ranking of 131 economies, using 80 indicators including political environment, education, infrastructure, and business sophistication of the economies. This year's report investigates the evolution and remaining challenges of financing mechanisms for entrepreneurs and other innovators, and explores how the economic fallout from the COVID-19 crisis will impact start-ups, venture capital, and other traditional sources of innovation financing.
This year's ranking of the world’s economies on innovation capacity and output still shows year-on-year stability at the top, but sees a gradual eastward shift in the locus of innovation toward Asian economies, notably China, India, the Philippines, and Vietnam, with Korea joining the top 10 for the first time and China retaining its 14th position. The top 20 ranking economies according to the report are as follows:
