2018 World IP Day Celebrates Women's Contribution to Innovation & Creativity
The World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) has recently announced that the theme of this year's World Intellectual Property Day (World IP Day) will be "Powering change: Women in innovation and creativity", which is to celebrate the "brilliance, ingenuity, curiosity and courage of the women who are driving change in our world and shaping our common future".
As stated in WIPO's press release for the 2018 World IP Day, "[t]he important and inspiring contributions of countless women around the globe are powering change in our world. Their 'can do' attitude is an inspiration to us all. … More than ever before, women are taking up leadership roles and making their voices heard in the science, technology, business and the arts. … The time is ripe to reflect on ways to ensure that increasing numbers of women and girls across the globe engage in innovation and creativity, and why this is so important."
World IP Day has been observed annually since 2000 on 26 April, the date upon which the convention establishing WIPO first entered into force in 1970, with a view to raise awareness of how IP impact our daily life and to celebrate contribution made by innovators to the development of societies across the globe. Designated theme of the year will be promoted by WIPO together with various government agencies, community groups, and individuals worldwide through campaigns, events and activities including seminars, public performances and exhibition.
