First 3Q Invention Patent Applications Filed with SIPO Up 21.7%
According to the data released recently by the State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO), a total of 1,876,000 patent applications were filed with the office during the first three quarters of 2015, representing a year-on-year growth of 22%.
Of the total applications, 709,000 (up 21.7% year-on-year) were patent applications for invention, 779,000 (up 33.6%) for utility model, and 388,000 (4.4%) for design. Among the invention patent applications for the period, those filed by domestic applicants surged 24.9% year-on-year to 610,000, and those by foreign applicants rose 5.1% to 99,000.
On the grants side, a total of 1,176,000 grants (up 25.8%) were issued during the period, of which 248,000 (up 46%) were grants to patent applications for invention, 599,000 (up 18.9%) for utility model, and 329,000 (26.1%) for design. Among the grants, 181,000 (up 52.5%) were issued to domestic applicants, and 67,000 (up 31.1%) to foreign applicants.
