SIPO Releases Patent Statistics of China for 2013
The State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO) recently released the statistics on patent applications and grants in China for year 2013. According to the data, the Office received a total of 2,377,061 applications for the three kinds of patents in China, namely, inventions, utility models, and designs, representing a year-on-year growth of 15.9%.
Applications for invention patents maintained rapid growth in recent years. In 2013, 825,136 invention patent applications were received by SIPO, an increase of 26.3% year-on-year, outperforming utility models and designs in terms of growth rate. Among the invention patent applications for the year, foreign applications received by SIPO rose 2.3% year-on-year to 120,200, while domestic applications surged 31.8% to 704,936.
On the grants side, a total of 1,313,000 grants were issued to applications for the three kinds of patents, representing a year-on-year increase of 4.6%. Among the grants, 207,688 were issued to invention patents, a drop of 4.1% from the previous year. In 2013, 143,535 grants were issued to invention patent applicants from home, more or less the same as the previous year, while grants to foreign invention patent applicants fell 12.3% from the previous year.
