At a news conference on 16 January 2023, China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA)'s deputy commissioner Mr. Hu Wenhui provided China's intellectual property (IP)-related statistics for year 2022 during his briefing on CNIPA's IP accomplishments over the year.

 

As reported, in 2022, the CNIPA granted about 798,000 invention patents, 2.8 million utility model patents, and 721,000 design patents. In addition, 74,000 PCT international patent applications were accepted, and 1,286 applications for international design registration under the Hague Agreement were filed. The year also saw the conclusion of 63,000 patent reexamination cases and 7,900 patent invalidation cases. As of the end of 2022, valid invention patents in China reached 4.21 million.

 

For trademarks, in 2022, about 6.18 million trademarks were registered and 5,827 international Madrid trademark applications filed by domestic applicants; in addition, 169,000 trademark opposition cases were examined and 412,000 trademark review and adjudication cases concluded. As of the end of 2022, valid trademark registrations in China amounted to 42.67 million.

 

As for geographical indication (GI) products, year 2022 saw the approval of 5 GI products and 514 GIs registered as collective trademarks and certification trademarks. Cumulatively, China had 2,495 approved GI products and 7,076 GI trademarks as of the end of 2022.

 

Regarding integrated circuit (IC) layout designs, 9,106 certificates for IC layout designs were issued in 2022, and as of the end of 2022, 61,000 IC layout design certificates were issued in China.

 

In respect of IP protection, in 2022, 58,000 patent infringement administrative cases were handled by IP authorities across the country, while in terms of IP commercialisation, patent and trademark pledge financing nationwide, involving 28,000 items, grossed RMB486.88 billion during the year.
