Theme of World Intellectual Property Day 2022: "IP and Youth: Innovating for a better future"
The World Intellectual Property Day (WIPD) is celebrated each year on 26 April to highlight the critical role that IP rights play in encouraging innovation and creativity. In 2022, the theme of WIPD, as determined by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), is: "IP and Youth: Innovating for a better future".
The WIPD 2022 recognises the huge, untapped source of ingenuity and creativity in young people to find new and better solutions that support the development of a sustainable future. According to WIPO's statement on WIPD 2022: "Millennials and Gen Z are change-makers; they are pragmatists and are not afraid speak out and challenge the status quo. Today’s youth are digital natives. They grew up in a connected world with mobile phones and the Internet, where the lines the physical and digital world is blurred. This has shaped a generation that is arguably the most entrepreneurial, innovative and creative yet."
During the WIPD 2022, campaigns and events will be held across the world to help young people gain a better understanding of how the tools of IP, such as trademarks, design rights, copyright, patents, and trade secrets, can support their ambitions, regardless in the arts, science or technology, to build a better future. The World IP Day also will take a close look at WIPO’s role in supporting national and regional efforts to create a legal and policy environment for young inventors, creators and entrepreneurs to thrive.
World Intellectual Property Day was established by the WIPO in 2000 to "raise awareness of how patents, copyright, trademarks and designs impact on daily life" and "to celebrate creativity, and the contribution made by creators and innovators to the development of societies across the globe".
