CNIPA Releases China's IP Data of 2021
Recently, China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) commissioner Mr. Shen Changyu released during a video conference the intellectual property (IP) statistical data of China for year 2021.
As reported, in 2021, the CNIPA granted 696,000 invention patents, 3,120,000 utility model patents, and 786,000 design patents, and received 73,000 PCT international patent applications. During the year, the CNIPA also approved 7,739,000 trademarks for registration, and 5,928 Madrid international trademark applications were filed by Chinese applicants. Furthermore, 99 products were awarded geographical indication (GI) protection, 477 GI trademarks approved for registration as certification and collective trademarks, and 13,000 layout designs of integrated circuits certified by the CNIPA in 2021.
In terms of examination cycle, in 2021, the examination of invention patent applications at CNIPA took 18.5 months to complete in average, and for applications involving high value invention patents, the examination period was reduced to 13.3 months; whereas the examination cycle of trademark applications was 4 months in average.
Regarding IP protection, in 2021, a total of 49,800 patent infringement administrative cases were handled nationwide, up 17.4% year-on-year. And for patent commercialisation, patent and trademark pledge financing amounted to RMB 309.8 billion in 2021, up 42% year-on-year.
