China's 2018 Statistics on National Patent Intensive Industry Released Jointly by CNIPA & National Bureau of Statistics
On 16 March 2020, China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) and National Bureau of Statistics of China (NBS) jointly published the official statistics on the national patent intensive industry in China, showing the value-added of the industry in 2018 on the basis of the data of the fourth national economic census.
According to the statistics, the overall value-added of the industry amounted to RMB10,709 billion, accounting for 11.6% of the country's GDP of the year. The following table shows the contribution of the seven categories of patent intensive industries to the national economy in terms of value-added in 2018. The classification of the industry was based on the Statistical Classification of Intellectual Property (Patent) Intensive Industries (2019) by nature of economic activities.

These first statistics on the Chinese patent intensive industries signify the formal implementation of the mechanism for auditing and reporting on the development status of the industry, against the backdrop of IP's increasingly important role, in relation to the traditional factors of production such as labour and capital, in the economic development of the country.
