CNIPA Releases China's IP Statistics for 2019
China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA) recently released the IP statistics of China for 2019, covering data on patents, trademarks, geographical indications (GIs), and layout-designs of integrated circuits (ICs).
In terms of patents, in 2019, 1,401,000 invention patent applications were filed with CNIPA; whereas PCT international patent applications accepted by CNIPA reached 61,000 (up 10.4% year-on-year), of which 57,000 were filed by domestic applicants. For patent grants, 453,000 invention patents (up 4.8%) were granted by CNIPA during the year, and 361,000 of them were to domestic applicants.
In terms of trademarks, in 2019, 7,837,000 trademark applications were filed with CNIPA, and the number of applications for international trademark registration under the Madrid Protocol stood at 6,491. For trademark registrations, 6,406,000 marks (up 27.9%) were registered at CNIPA during the year, of which 6,178,000 were domestic ones.
Regarding geographical indications, in 2019, CNIPA approved 5 GI products, registered 462 GI trademarks, and permitted 301 enterprises to use special marks of GI. As for layout-designs of ICs, 8,319 applications for registration thereof were received and 6,614 certified by CNIPA during the year.
