In Asia, China rose 3 spots to the 14th position this year from the 17th last year, while India moved up 5 places to the 52th position this year from the 57th last year. China kept the upward momentum for the fourth consecutive years. According to WIPO director general Francis Gurry, "the rise in the GII by economic powerhouses like China and India have transformed the geography of innovation and this reflects deliberate policy action to promote innovation.”

The GII ranks economies annually by their innovation capacity and performance. This 12th edition of the GII ranks 129 economies based on 80 indicators, from traditional measurements like research and development investments and international patent and trademark applications to newer indicators including mobile-phone app creation and high-tech exports.
