China among Global Top 5 in International Trademark Filings 2016
According to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO)'s recently released statistics, Chinese applicants filed a total of 3,014 applications for international trademark registration through the Madrid system in 2016, a rise of 29.8% from the previous year.
This rendered China the fifth, for the first time since it joined the Madrid Agreement in 1989, among the top Madrid Union filers for international trademark applications during the year after European Union (8,526 applications), the US (7,856), Germany (4,842), and France (3,796). As of the end of 2016, China had 22,270 valid trademarks of international registration under the Madrid Agreement.
