Patent Filings with SIPO in First Half of 2016 Rise 35.5% Year-on-Year
According to the statistics of the State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO), a total of 1,523,227 applications for the three kinds of patents in China (i.e., invention, utility model, and design) were received by SIPO during the first half of 2016, up 35.5% over the first half of 2015.
Among the total patent applications, 553,317 were for invention patents (up 30.5% year-on-year), 683,139 for utility model patents (up 44.9%), and 286,771 for design patents (up 25.2%). In terms of applications for invention patents, 487,498 were from domestic applicants and 65,819 from foreign applicants, accounting for 88.1% and 11.9% of the total invention patent applications filed during the period respectively.
As for patent grants, a total of 786,345 patents (up 5%) were granted by SIPO during the period, of which 214,210 were invention patents (up 33.4%), 391,944 utility model patents (up 4.4%), and 180,191 design patents (down 15.1%). In terms of grants for invention patents, 164,163 were to domestic applicants and 50,047 to overseas applicants, accounting for 76.6% and 23.4% of the total invention patent grants during the period respectively.
