IP5 Statistics Report 2013 Published
Recently, the 2013 edition of the IP5 Statistics Report, a compilation of patent statistics for the world’s five major intellectual property offices (IP5 Offices), namely the European Patent Office (EPO), the Japan Patent Office (JPO), the Korean Intellectual Property Office (KIPO), the State Intellectual Property Office of China (SIPO), and the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO), was released.
According to the report, in 2013, the IP5 Offices together received 2,077,642 patent applications (up 11% from the previous year), and granted 956,644 patents (up 4%). Among the IP5 Offices, SIPO saw the fastest growth of 26.4% with 825,136 applications received, and granted 207,688 patents, a decrease of 4.3% from the previous year.
As for PCT applications, a total of 168,000 applications were filed with the IP5 Offices, accounting for 82% of the PCT applications filed worldwide in 2013. SIPO as a PCT Receiving Office reported the largest growth rate of 15% among the IP5 Offices, with 22,924 applications received during the year.
