China Ranks 29 in Global Innovation Index

The 2011 results of Global Innovation Index (GII) were released on 30 June jointly by INSEAD and its knowledge partners including World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO).

GII is a global index measuring the level of innovation of an economy in terms of their innovation capabilities and results launched by INSEAD in 2007. This year's GII covers 125 economies, accounting for 93.2% of the world's population. China ranks 29^thon the list and is the only developing country among the top 30 innovators.

By region, China is number 7 among the East Asia/Pacific economies, and by income group, China tops the GII rankings among the lower-middle-income economies.

The GII measures innovation in terms of a simple average of two sub-indices, namely, Innovation Input Sub-Index and Innovation Output Sub-Index. The former gauges elements of the national economy that enable innovative activities, grouped in five pillars including "Institutions", "Human capital and research", "Infrastructure", "Market sophistication", and "Business sophistication", whereas the latter captures actual evidence of innovation outputs in two pillars of "Scientific outputs" and "Creative outputs".
