European Patent Office Delegation Visits CPA Shenzhen Office & Meets High-tech Enterprises

On 2-4 November 2016, a five-member delegation from the European Patent Office (EPO) leaded by Dr. Ingo Seelmann visited China Patent Agent (H.K.) Ltd. (CPA) Shenzhen Office.
In the afternoon of 2 November at CPA Shenzhen Office, the EPO delegates met patent attorneys of our firm and representatives of some high-tech enterprises from Guangdong province. The meeting, moderated by CPA Shenzhen Office director Mr. Yuan Shaohui, discussed the latest status of the Chinese and European patent application and examination practice, and expounded the EPO examination requirements and prosecution practice of biological and pharmaceutical inventions. Topics addressed included: strategy of filing a European patent application, EPO's stances on pharmaceutical inventions and biotech inventions, examination of patent applications involving polymorphs at EPO, and general issues related to the European examination of bioinformatics patent applications.
On 3rd and 4th November, the EPO delegation, accompanied by CPA Shenzhen Office director Mr. Yuan, paid a visit to two high-tech enterprises, namely, Shenzhen Chipscreen Biosciences Ltd. and Shenzhen Salubris Pharmaceuticals Co., Ltd. After seeing the research laboratories of the enterprises, the delegates conducted business exchanges with IP personnel of the enterprises, and gave them advice on European patent application and protection strategies.
The meetings have helped promote mutual understanding between CPA attorneys, EPO examiners, and the high-tech enterprises, and are also conducive to enhancing our capability for handling European patent applications.
