CPA Successfully Holds 40th Anniversary Commemoration and International IP Services Symposium

This year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of our firm, China Patent Agent (H.K.) Ltd. (CPA). On 25 April 2024, the Commemoration of the 40th Anniversary of the China Patent Agent (H.K.) Ltd. and Symposium on International Intellectual Property Services were held in Beijing. Mr. Ren Hongbin, chairman of China Council for the Promotion of International Trade (CCPIT), and Mr. Lu Pengqi, deputy commissioner of the China National Intellectual Property Administration (CNIPA), attended and addressed the opening ceremony. World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) deputy director-general Ms. Wang Binying sent a message of congratulations and Intellectual Property Department of Hong Kong (HKIPD) director Mr. Wong Fuk Loi delivered a video message on our firm's 40th anniversary. The event was attended by about 160 representatives from relevant government departments, intellectual property (IP) industry associations, IP research institutions, and innovation entities.

CCPIT chairman Mr. Ren in his remarks noted that IP services play an important role in stimulating innovation, promoting openness, and advancing the construction of a high-standard market system. He suggested that development of the IP service industry can be fostered on three prongs: first, consistently improve the standard of IP services: using new technologies and new means to improve service quality and efficiency, expanding the scope of IP services, and developing more personalised and customised services; second, strengthen industry infrastructure: enhancing IP laws and regulations, advocating industry self-discipline, and cultivating international high-end IP talents; third, vigorously carry out international IP cooperation: making good use of relevant international organisation platforms, promoting knowledge sharing, and boosting global innovation.

CNIPA deputy commissioner Mr. Lu in his remarks congratulated CPA on its 40th anniversary. He indicated that the CNIPA will give full play to IP system's role in facilitating innovation and exploitation of green technologies and will strongly support green transformation and upgrade of industries. At the same time, the CNIPA will strengthen the whole chain IP work encompassing IP innovation, exploitation, protection, management and service provision; step up international cooperation in IP protection; and strive to create a new landscape for IP development.

WIPO China senior counsellor Mr. Bai Guangqing read WIPO deputy director-general Ms. Wang Binying's congratulory letter. 

In her congratulatory message, WIPO deputy director-general Ms. Wang expressed WIPO's hope that CPA, in writing a new chapter of its history, will keep on leveraging its edges in industry leadership and professional expertise, making even greater contribution to the prosperity and development of global IP service industry. She also stated that WIPO would like to further strengthen cooperation with the CCPIT and CPA to jointly push forward the progress of the global IP ecosystem.

HKIPD director Mr. Wong Fuk Loi delivered a video message.

HKIPD director Mr. Wong in his video speech mentioned that the Hong Kong SAR commits to building the territory into a regional IP trading centre in alignment with the national development strategy, with a series of measures to reinforce the nurturing of IP talents and encourage enterprises to innovate. He said that HKIPD looks forward to maintaining close cooperation with CPA and jointly contributing to the national strategy of building an IP power.

Lenovo founder Mr. Liu Chuanzhi delivered a speech.

During the keynote speech session, Mr. Liu Chuanzhi, founder of Chinese computer manufacturer Lenovo; Mr. Ma Yide, dean of School of Intellectual Property of the University of Chinese Academy of Sciences; Ms. Wang Lijuan, deputy general manager of Science and Technology Department of Sinopec; Mr. Wong Kam Fu, vice chairman of CPA; and Mr. Wu Yehe, general manager of CPA spoke respectively for the occasion. They reviewed the founding and evolution of CPA, and shared insights into maximising the potential of IP and facilitating the development of new quality productive forces, among others.

During the symposium, heads of IP-related industry associations, experts and scholars from universities, and representatives of well-known enterprises engaged in discussions about the development and prospects of IP service industry as well as empowering the development of new quality productive forces through technological and technical innovation.

Representatives from IP-related industry associations, universities, and well-known enterprises engaged in discussions on the themes of the symposium.

Former CCPIT Patent and Trademark Law Office Mr. Ma Hao in a media interview during the symposium stressed that "protecting IP rights is protecting innovation".

Former CPA general manager Mr. Li Yong shared that he witnessed the impressive, sustained betterment of the Chinese IP protection system during his past forty years' service in the industry, 

and noteworthily, patent reserves in the field of digital technology are steadily increasing.
