CPA Hosts Overseas IP Protection Lecture on World IP Day

In celebration of the 23rd World Intellectual Property Day, the 2023 National Intellectual Property Publicity Week has kicked off in China on 20 April. Leveraging this occasion, China Patent Agent (H.K.) Ltd. (CPA) hosted the "4.26 Lecture on Overseas Intellectual Property Rights Protection for Enterprises" on 26 April 2023, carrying a theme of "Strengthening legal protection for intellectual property rights; Providing solid support to all-round innovation".

 

During the lecture, CPA general manager Mr. Wu Yuhe, also vice chairman of the China Intellectual Property Society and vice chairman of the Chinese Group of AIPPI, briefed on the background of the event, and reviewed a series of past efforts through which our firm assisted domestic enterprises to "go global" in the field of intellectual property. He further stressed that it is a compelling obligation of CPA to play an active role in assisting domestic enterprises to "go global" and attain internationalised development.

 

The lecture, delivered by Ms. Zhang Lei, deputy manager of CPA Beijing Office Trademark Department, highlighted some recent incidents and trends related to Chinese trademark registration applications and post-registration matters in the U.S., among them the new ex parte proceedings of expungement and reexamination introduced by the Trademark Modernization Act of the U.S., the sanctions against some Chinese IP firms rendering a large number of U.S. trademark registration applications invalid; United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO)'s slowing down the examination of trademark registration applications submitted by Chinese companies, and tightening of the trademark examination standards in the U.S. And in addition to detailing the issues of overseas trademark rights enforcement and intellectual property protection strategies, Ms. Zhang also shared her experience of handling cases in Asia, Europe, North America, South America and other regions with reference to a selection of typical cases CPA previously represented our clients.
